I think a lot of people use copyrighted music on their reel. Generally it's not a problem - reels aren't commercially for sale productions so I think there is a relaxed attitude to the music being used as there is with amateur films.
1. a space ship
2. light savers
3. lens flairs
4. pirated elements
5. bad stuff
6. a bad lable/embed page
7. techno music
8. an open screen with a phone number lasting long enough for me to kick out the DVD and move on to the next one
9. reapeated effects
10. I'll repeat the light saber thing.
I have reels sent to me every week with this, and students at the college I teach try to hand this crap in....
NO VIDEO CO-PILOT tutorial projects on your reel!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate Andrew Kramer's gift of AE tricks, but I think he's done a huge disservice to the vfx/motion design world by giving too many 'finishing' tricks to kids who haven't done their proper ground work yet. This has completely flooded the talent pool with millions+ of demo reels that mimic his tutorials, which in turn yield REALLY impressive shots to someone who isn't familiar with VCP.
Of course to me or any other potential employer, we'd see right through it. Unfortunately in the free-lance world, not all clients will be as discerning, and therefore won't realize what they're looking at is just a paint-by-number-artist.
Don't get me wrong, I'm against hoarding knowledge, I think it's great to have free resources for everyone. But beginners should not be given these gimmicky finishing tricks (CC/flares/vignette/grain/etc) until they've earned their way there. It's the same thing as putting these new DSLR video cameras in the hands of amateurs who haven't learned to make a movie with a handicam yet. They're given the luxury of pristine (beautiful) footage, without ever having to learn the fundamentals of film making.
Call me a dinosaur, but back in the 80s I began making movies on a shitty borrowed vhs handicam. This taught me the foundations of film making and forced me to be clever for YEARS until I finally hit the day when I was able to shoot stuff on 35mm film.
I won't gripe about technology, but I will about giving away these paint-by-numbers gimmicks. Kramer's made some good coin, and I can't say I blame him much. But he has to be held accountable for diluting the talent-pool.
This wasn't mean to be a VCP rant, but bottom line don't use any obvious tutorial'd clips.
