I'm so confused... Why the aggression? I simply chose not to critique his stuff, because there comes a point where shots end up looking a certain way because of supervisors feedback, and didn't think there were basic comp crits were necessary.

You're assuming that i'm not aware of this already. You're also assuming that when I gave that feedback I wasn't aware that often shots are dictated by the clients decisions. I've got lots of shots that have turned to absolute poo because of decisions made by the client. Shit happens.

If you want to sugar coat everything. Go ahead. I can't respect the opinion of people that do that. As for the aforementioned shot, compared to the rest of the reel, it should be taken out. Watch the shot again (with your gamma turned up if you're having difficulty) if you're worth your salt you'll see what i'm taking about.

As for the rest of the reel. It's awesome! I've never denied that.. a bit long.. but really nice...

As for making names for ourselves.. don't we all. Including you.

Donald thats exactly what happened on that shot. There was a version that I really liked. There are lots a dont like about that shot but there are lots I don't like about all my shots. I wouldn't have a reel if I kept all the shots I hated off of it.

Dudefest thanks for not "blowing smoke up my ass" I'm not a sensitive dude but I see what Donald is talking about. Tacked is a good thing.

It's all good work! After working on Flags, I know how difficult some of the shots in the Pacific must have been. In spite of that, here's my short critique below.



It's pushing almost four minutes, and I think you only need one contact line that shows your name and number and email (instead of one at the head and tail). Or just remove it entirely, relying on the resume in front of the recruiter (it has been a while, of course). That is what I did.

The epicness of the whole seemed appropriate for the reel, there are a lot of long, drawn out shots, that you can't really cut to a quick tempo. Maybe cutting some of the older work out might help the length.. Concerning length, it didn't bother me too much. I mean, mines running 3:22! You cut out the front and end contacts, and it's probably the same length. For someone starting out, I would recommend a sub 2 minute reel, but for a professional reel, a 3 minute seems about right. Trying to shove more than a decades worth of work into two minutes can be tough. Cheers, thumbs up!

Great tips Aruna. And funny pic as well. I'll do a few when I re-edit the reel here soon as I got some plates so I can do some more break downs.

Im just a lowly vfx student, so here is my humble opinion. I think you have a great reel, but I almost closed it because the first shot was over 30 seconds long, so I assumed the entire reel was just gonna be this one shot. You had some great shots later in the reel, so my humble suggestion is just trim down the length of the first shot (and maybe some of the other longer shots), or put some of the better shots earlier in the reel. I think doing that would have grabbed my attention (and perhaps some employers' as well) substantially more. Other than that, great reel, cool breakdowns, and good luck!

That one shot in the show is about 2 minutes long as it follows Sledge up the beach. It blends 5 different plates to make it seem like 1 seem-less camera move. It was also a bitch to track. So I could have made that one shot my whole reel ;-) Maybe I will next time.

Lol. Dude, you got crazy stuff in there. You could have done the first shot and smacked in a comp of a silly monkey waving a crowbar and you´d still get the jobs. Fantastic work. Tell us, how much compositing, how much vfx? Wondering, cuz you guys must have extra-pertinent workflows throughout all departments. Do you do vfx along with the tracks, or is most of it brought to your desk with a note "Composite!"

On my reel the only thing I didn't do was a few helicopters in 3d. I tend to work at places where I can do everything-- its more fun that way.

Agreed. I think Jeremy is someone who's earned the right to have a reel this long, his work speaks for itself. I also think that even if someone skips through it or turns it off, they'll still get the overwhelming impression that this guy is a talented comper.

Great work Jeremy! I'm inspired. :-)

your reel is awesome! hope you can show more detailed breakdowns, especially of the battle field scenes! then people will never feel it's too long. great work!

I have no idea how I could have missed that! Great real man, congratulations!
It´s nice to see these "animated" breakdowns and not only a simple wipe, espacially in the cabin-explosion shot (combined with the ping-pong playback)(hoping for more breakdowns though )

Very encouraging and fun to watch all the way through!

btw: did Fusion python capabilities come into play during production? I havn´t really seen anyone using python in Fusion by now.

all the stuff was done in fusion 5.31 so there was no python included yet. Hoping to use it on future projects though.
