VFX reel - July 26th, 2010, 05:38 PM

Hello everybody,

My name is Vincent Blin, I am a 26 years old French, Junior Compositor currently looking for a Junior position in the industry.

I just finished a spec commercial as part of my internship at Zoic Studios. It got such good feedback that they are putting it on their website.

I comped everything myself in both Nuke and AE.

Here is a link to my breakdown/reel followed by the commercial itself.

Let me know what you think of it and if you know people who might be interested in my skills

Vincent

If just copied the vimeo-id from the source-code ... hope you don´t mind.

Vincent Blin's demo reel

Cool spot indeed. The only minor thing that feels don´t quite right to me is the walk-animation of the panther.

I suppose this is part of the project(s?) that is completely produced by the interns. Or was any Zoic staff involved?

Nice one !

Looks pretty cool...

There is just one part (starting at 2:23 - where you see the car and the guy from the back) where the guy seems to get to much light for the scene? He somehow doesn't fit into the scene.

...but probably just my opinion.

Anyway...nice one!

@L-Rac: Yes this spot was fully produced and directed by me and an other intern and we were 4 working on it. No staff involved, only for advises and we were allowed to use Zoic's render farm at night if nothing was rendering for Zoic.
The team was: One rigger, one animator, one modeler/renderer and I did the whole comping. I know it is not perfect but it was the first time I opened Nuke and after all we were learning interns

@Phinick: I totally agree, in fact I am also the actor of the spot haha. This was shot in Century City so we were not really allowed to shoot there. We could not bring lights and anything. In fact, all the footage had crazy lighting since we shot over several days because we kept being kicked out. So I had a color correction in flame but even this could not erase all the mistakes.

Wow. Great work Vblin. I like reflections on panther - very realistic.
I'v recognized the Century City buildings in your video, and you confirmed in your reply to Phinick. I always wondered how people get the permission to shoot for a student project or reel in locations like this and how much it might cost - now I know.

Hello MR Z,

For the panther we used actual HDR that I took of the plazza when it is in the city.
And for the forest, we used HDR of an other forest with some parts of the actual plate to make it match the environment.

We got caught shooting in the forest and they asked for 500 dollars for a permit, so I shrunk my crew from 5 to 2 and we went gorilla.
For the city, we got caught 5 times so we shot there 5 days.
In the end, the guards were really pissed but since I am French I pulled the excusez moi Mr, no speak English haha.

Thank you for your appreciation !!

Ah finally got to see it now.

Constructive criticism (hopefully)

Most reels are around 1 min long, this is nearly 3 !
All of the break downs are way to long, definitely shorten them down, I doubt anyone needs to see each and every pass, just a couple will suffice.
If someone is REALLY interested, they will ask to see a more detailed break down I'm sure of it

I'd rather see the completed piece right at the start.

The shot where he is looking at the car, and the camera is behind. He looks overly bright like there is a big light on him but it's not shining on the building or ground, feels a bit odd. (I know it was mentioned already)

Other wise, it's a really great piece - edit - edit- edit

Hi Rob;

I do appreciate constructive criticism.
The only problem is that the project itself is already 1 minute long which would lead to 0 sec of Breakdown if I respect the 1 min reel.

And for the back of my head, I know, I had some major CC issue..

Usually reels are either made up of multiple shots/scene's that aren't relevant to each other, or they are a 'short' whereby it's a narrative of some sort, which in your case, that's what you have.
So I'd personally just re-edit it, show the whole thing, then just have 10-20 seconds of quick breakdowns at the end imho.

After watching about an hour or so of Mike Seymour (fxphd.com & fxguide.com) go through various reels which were sent in, he gave his honest opinions and suggestions for improving the reels.
Most of the time they needed editing, to either take shots out, or to re-arrange to put best work first.
He said a lot of the time people will play the reel at 2x the speed until they see something interesting !

Also if you aren't happy with a shot, just take it out, it may bother you but nobody else will know

Good luck !
