New Rotoscope Reel... -
February 4th, 2008, 06:21 PM
Hey there folks,
Well it's been a while since I've been able to post anything here, so i thought I'd get some feedback from you folks.
I've been out of school for a year and nobody has bitten. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here, I originally marketed myself as a compositor but nobody would give me a chance, so I decided to throw together this rotoscope reel to see what people had to say.
You can find my reel here:
http://www.jaheredia.com/files/rotoreellg.mov (18MB, 720x480)
and here:
http://www.jaheredia.com/files/rotoreelsm.mov (6MB, 320x480)
I would greatly appreciate any feedback and advice that you folks may have.
Thank you.
- Jorge

I thought it was nice. What did you use to roto? I just had to roto a bunch of cloth on a guy playing tennis and his headband. Not fun but we used Mocha which helped out a lot.

Thank you very much! I used After Effects to do the roto, which itself is not very fun.
I'm trying to teach myself Silhouette for the next 15 days that I have this trial version.

Good stuff. Its a good thing to concentrate on your rotos and prep work, coz when u start working, thats what they're require you to do (and thats what they look for when they hiring freshers)

Really nice (and depressing) to see the rototimes on the shot. It's very insightful and gives me something to aim for performancewise. You don't see that too often, but I think it's very insightful. And it's good stuff as well. Well done.

Thank you!
Yes, I kind of figured that I may have to start at the bottom and work my way up (nothing wrong with that). Hopefully this will open up a few doors soon.

Great looking stuff Jorge. I'm actually helping with some comp work on Bohemibot. When I saw your shot I was like "hey that looks familiar". Great job!

Nice reel, definitely shows that you know how to roto. If you still have access to the project files, if can show that you know how to use multiple shapes and negitive shapes would help. In some roto reels, I've seen the original footage, the black and white matte and then another matte with each shape used in the matte colored differently.
If you have time show that you can roto hair, motion blur or really slow moving objects. These are all only extra suggestions, I think your reel looks really good as is.
Congrats Man!

good roto, I recognize a shot I worked on (the guy in the hospital with the dark corner) I did the comping but they provided me with a crapy roto and I see that finally someone fixed it good job! all the roto works well in your reel, my suggestion is to insert a couple of removals. If you want to be a roto artist part of the job will be painting / removal.
